Make Up And Beauty And What The Bible Says About Them

One morning I was fixing myself in front of my mirror. For some reason I couldn’t get my brows done the way I wanted them to look. And my lipstick shade didn’t even match my blush! And just like a grade schooler who wasn’t pleased with her project, I removed all the makeup I had on my face and started from scratch.

I love makeup. I love collecting them, well at least those that I find really good for my skin and with my skin tone. And while most people think I am a makeup expert just because I post some of my makeup collection on social media – I am not. Not even close.

Many women today buy makeup because they feel the pressure to level up to society’s expectations or to what’s labeled as fashionable and cool. Makeup is a hobby and not a necessity. So women can basically live without it. In fact, I have a few friends who aren’t into makeup and they look really great even without colors on their face.

As women, the way we look often has an impact on how our society perceives us — and how we perceive ourselves, too.

There were women in the Bible who were noted for how they looked. Rachel, Esther, and Abigail, to name a few.

Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance. Genesis 29:17 ESV

He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, the daughter of his uncle, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman had a beautiful figure and was lovely to look at, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter. Esther 2:7 ESV

Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. The woman was discerning and beautiful, but the man was harsh and badly behaved; he was a Calebite. 1 Samuel 25:3 ESV

But we know that how we look isn’t of foremost importance; Proverbs 31:30 writes about how a woman’s fear of the Lord was to be praised over charm and beauty. And so we should know that makeup’s place is as a hobby and never a necessity. God’s word in Psalm 139:14 says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made! So whether we have been blessed with a flawless face, fit bodies or with acne scars and darker than a panda’s under-eyes, you know that God sees you as someone beautiful!

And so our confidence must not be reliant on our outward embellishment or lack thereof; not in our perfectly made up face but in Jesus and in His work in our lives. Whether you’re a makeup fan (like me), or you are someone who loves to adorn yourself with dresses or accessories, ultimately, the most substantial and vital beauty comes from within.

In our world today where standards on how a beautiful woman should look like are being set as golden rules, we need to remind ourselves of this truth: We are fearfully and wonderfully made, when Jesus looks at us, He sees a beautiful woman – with or without makeup, thin or fat, acne scars or clear skin. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL IN GOD’S EYES and that’s all that matters.
